- What is El Cenote Azul?

El Cenote Azul is a fun and caring environment where you can make friends easily, eat good food, feel safe and make the most out of your Mexico City experience. It is in the heart of the National University area, where you can find everything from incredible sight-seeing, tranquil walking areas, relaxed bohemian atmospheres to intensive nightlife. Over time, we have become an important resource for national and international students, travelers and visitors to Mexico City that want to avoid massive crowds, crazy traffic and constant city noises. Our website aims at providing useful information for people that visit and who live in Mexico City. El Cenote Azul is proud of it's neighborhood, city and country and strives to help others feel welcome here.

- Does El Cenote Azul offer vegetarian food?

Yes. Our Restaurant Menu includes a variety of vegetarian, locally-produced, organic, free-trade and slow-food dishes that are healthy, safe to eat and wonderful to share with your friends!

- What is El Cenote Azul's policy on alcohol?

El Cenote Azul is licensed and authorized to sell, serve and allow for  people over the age of 18 the consumption of alcohol on its premises. We DO NOT allow people to take-out alcoholic beverages, even to the sidewalk. The Restaurant reserves the right to CARD and ask for appropriate identification.

- Is there smoking allowed in El Cenote Azul?

- I want to schedule my sight-seeing in Mexico City. When is Traffic Rush-Hour?

Both on the subway as on major avenues throughout the city: Monday through Friday is from 8-10 am and 6-8pm. You can also find somewhat heavy traffic during lunch-time, from 2-4pm. Week-end Traffic is usually calm.

Traffic in the El Cenote Azul neighborhood is usually light to almost non-existent!!!!

- Will my cell-phone work in Mexico? What if I have an iPhone?

Most carriers allow for international roaming. Nonetheless, if your phone is based on pre-paid phone cards, you might have to switch to a local service provider such as Telcel, Iusacel or Movistar.

The Telcel and Movistar (Telefonica) companies are the only carriers that provide services for iPhones. There are several places in Mexico City near El Cenote Azul that can help you with this.

- Will my electronic equipment work in Mexico? What is the voltage there?

Some devices from Europe and Asia might need plug-in adapters. The voltage here is 110 V, 60 Hz.

- I hear a lot about the violence in Mexico. Is it safe to travel there?

Most of the organized-crime-related news comes from very specific parts and some cities in the country. Mexico City, as well as a large part of Mexico, is safe given that you follow common-sense and that you not put yourself in unnecessary risky situations. For example, when going on the subway, put your wallet in your front pant pocket, and do not wear showy jewelery when walking on the street.

Traveling by bus around the country is also safe, given that you again follow common-sense.

Mexico City also offers women-only subway-wagons during rush-hours and women-only buses throughout the city.

The surrounding neighborhood of El Cenote Azul is mostly quiet, safe and friendly with regular  police patrols, safe-taxi sites and other non-invasive security features.

- What kind of weather should I pack for?

Mexico is a very large country and offers different types of climate to experience. But in general, Mexico City and the the central provincial areas above 2000 meters are:

                              - cool with irregular rain fall (60-70 degrees F) from October to February.

                              - hot and dry (70-85 degrees F) from February to May.

                              - sunny days with heavy afternoon rains (65-80 degrees F) from May to October.

There are several micro-climate areas inside and near Mexico City that are definitely worth visiting. If you are interested in knowing them or planning to visit other places such as Chiapas, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, Tepoztlán or Acapulco, feel free to ask us!   Check the current weather conditions here.

- Where do I exchange foreign currency? Should I change money before I go to Mexico?

Although you can change money before your arrival, you should note that your bank may charge you for this service, as well as that the exchange rate may vary later.

In Mexico, only authorized exchange centers, called "Casas de Cambio" can change money with no added commissions. BANKS DO NOT EXCHANGE CURRENCY (except those in airports). The best rates are usually in the Mexico City International Airport, where you can find Casas de Cambio and authorized Bank offices. You can check current rates here.
