About El Cenote Azul
"El Cenote Azul" means blue underground lagoon. Our Cenote is fed by streams of music, culture and politics from the surrounds of the nearby cultural hot-spots of Copilco, the University of Mexico, and the centre of Coyoacán.
It is a small 12 bed oasis on the South Side of Mexico City, close to the Copilco subway station and at a two minute walk to the National University of Mexico (UNAM,) the largest in Latin America. Our cafe, frequented by Mexican students, provides a perfect opportunity to make friends and to practice your Spanish in a relaxed atmosphere.
Just to the north of our hostel is Coyoacán, known for its street-theatre, artists, musicians and home to many historical sites and cultural centres, the most famous being the houses of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and of Leon Trotsky. Coyoacán, with its many small bars, restaurants and theatres also has a quite active night life. No need to always go down-town for the bright lights.
To the northeast lies colonial San Angel, where the open air markets that line the cobbled streets, sell a wide variety of traditional Mexican art.
To the South is Cuicuilco. There, you will find the only circular pyramids known in Mexico. A bit further, and you can ride upon the floating gardens of Xochmilco. All of this to bring our prehispanic ancestors closer.
We the Ley Cooper family, have opened our home to travelers, with the vision to facilitate building a global connection between Mexicans and foreigners to enrich our community.
In our home, world music resounds, complementing our diverse and innovative menu, with recipes such as French crepes filled with Aztec huitlacoche mushrooms, Italian pastas topped with Mexican chorizo, and even cheese-stuffed chile peppers in Asian mango sauce. Our organic coffee comes from indigenous communities in Oaxaca, who participate in the UCIRI project to guarantee sustainable development.
