Downtown Coyoacán

Coyoacan is one of the highlights in El Cenote Azul's area. Starting at only a short jog to about 15 minutes away is the heart of Mexico City's cultural life.

Coyoacan has something for everyone and for all different moods and needs. Feel like taking a morning run? Go to the Viveros de Coyoacan at only 4 minutes away on the subway and enjoy some of the cleanest air in the city. There you can enjoy a variety of free city-sponsored activities that go all day long like yoga, meditation, weight lifting, jogging, competitive running, children's activities, environmental workshops and much more.

Maybe a good movie? Not Hollywood, but world class cultural and independent film! Then you must go the Cineteca Nacional! One of the most recognized film authorities in Latin America is just 5 minutes walking from the Coyoacan metro station.

The Downtown Coyoacan area is close to Viveros and the Cineteca, about 10 minutes walking.  But, you can get there straight from El Cenote Azul in only 15 minutes by bus. It is what most people rave about being the most appreciated area of Mexico City. And with no doubt, several historical figures like Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Octavio Paz, David Alfaro Siquieros, Dolores del Rio and Leon Trosky thought the same thing and even lived in this neighborhood.

Some of the several places that you don't want to miss are Frida Kahlo's House, the three floor Artisan's Bazaar, Diego Rivera's Anacahualli Museum, and the Museum of Popular Cultures. While walking around you will have plenty of chances to rest and admire the abundant gardens and colonial churches in the area.

The very centre of Coyoacan is Plaza Hidalgo. Free open-air concerts, from classical music to Hindi RÄgas, along with abundant artesian handicraft sales make it a hot-spot every weekend. Surrounding the Plaza are the Delegation Offices, which used to be Hernan Cortez' home during the first quarter of the 16th century. You will also find close-by an abundance of small cozy bohemian bars with live music, vegetarian and ethnic restaurants, book stores, theatres, cultural and language centres, as well as an incredible, happy, colorful and festive environment that you will never forget.

HOW TO GET THERE

Very easy. From El Cenote Azul, walk one block towards your Right to the street corner.

- Turn Left and walk to the Copilco Metro Station.

- If you want to go and run at the Viveros de Coyoacan, get on the metro going to "Indios Verdes". Get off at the second stop called "Viveros" and start stretching!

- If you want to go to the Cineteca Nacional, get off on the third metro stop (in the same direction), called "Coyoacan".

- If you want to go to downtown Coyoacan, forget the subway and go by bus. Cross the street at the Copilco Metro Station. Wait at the corner in front of a fast food restaurant (Burger King).

- Get on any bus marked "Coyoacan" or "Plaza Hidalgo". Cost: $3 pesos (25 cents USD)

- Ask to get off at the Plaza of Coyoacan. You will recognize it when you're there. Enjoy!

If you want to go walking, just ask one of El Cenote Azul's staff to make a map for you!
