THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY (UNAM)

 THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO

One of the closest highlights of the city is surely the National University, in Spanish called the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). You might be in Mexico City because you plan on attending classes at the UNAM. If so, well CONGRATULATIONS or GOOD LUCK on getting accepted!!! The UNAM is one of the top universities world wide, the largest in Latin America and a definite light post for international Academia.

Whether your in Mexico City for a short  while or a longer one, this site offers several artistic, cultural, scientific and environmental attractions. The Central library and several other buildings, including the PUMAS stadium, are covered in massive mosaic murals made by Juan O. Gorman, Diego Rivera and other recognized artists. The University has many cultural centers on its main campus and throughout the city with a year long calender of events, many that are free or at a very low cost. Also, if you're a nature lover, then you absolutely must visit any of the botanical gardens that surround the main campus.

HOW TO GET THERE

- Very easy. From El Cenote Azul, walk one block towards the Metro Copilco Station.

- You should then be where Av. Cerro del Agua starts. To your left you will see the entrance to the University.

- Walk through the gates and choose any direction you like!

You can also use the UNAM's inner transportation service, called "Pumas". The service is completely FREE!!!

Check the UNAM bus routes here.

The UNAM's campus is very large. You can check a map here.

BASIC BREAKDOWN

Time to get to main gates: about one minute walking.

Expected time to spend at site: a quick visit should be no longer than an hour, unless you plan visiting the gardens or a cultural event.

Cost: Access is free. Some cultural events vary from $15 to $150 pesos (about $1-12 USD). Discounts offered for students and professors, make sure to carry your ISIC card if you have one.

Food: Several cafeterias and restaurants on campus. Average meal from $30 to $80 pesos (about $2.50-7 USD)

Tips: - Refill your water bottle at El Cenote Azul's kitchen and carry it for your walk on campus.

          - The UNAM is very tourist friendly. Several students speak English and other languages. Don't be surprised if you get invited to hang out and have a beer back at the Cenote Azul's restaurant! Go on! Make friends!
